Monotype and Monoprint

Monotype printmaking is a spontaneous, painterly method of printing. The technique creates a unique, one-of-a-kind print. Ink is usually applied to a smooth non-absorbent surface, and then transferred to paper, using a press or by hand. The method allows artists to build up layers of colour, use of stencils and mark-making effects. These create a painterly style.
The Monoprint method is similar to monotype, in that the print is one-of-a-kind. However, the monoprint can be a series of prints where each print is unique but shares a common repeatable element. This could be an etched or carved line, a linocut, or a found object. Variable elements are added to each work, such as different colourways or hand drawing etc, making each print unique, but similar to others in the series.
