Lemba Light, Cyprus

A series of small paintings based on the architecture and light experienced whilst on a residency to Cyprus, 2018.

Extract from the artist’s journal September 2018….

Now in Cyprus it is the intensity of light that is interesting me, the light and the constant blue skies. The blue sky frames everything. It is so constant, bright and sharp. The whitewashed traditional stone buildings reflect their whiteness against the sky. Plants throw out dappled shadows against the stone structures or present sharp angular like forms as the light frames the succulent shapes of the prickly pear plant, the crisp shadows creating sculptural structures reminiscent of Calder’s mobiles. Windows and doors, with their layers of painted colours, revealing their history, create shifting shadows as the sun rotates in the sky.
